Sold Bamboo bangles are iconic pieces of Edwardian jewellery, highly sought after by antique jewellery collectors. They came into fashion in the early 1900’s when the West was embracing Eastern themes in the creative arts. Bamboo is a supercharged motif of good fortune and abundance in many Asian countries. Used for everything from cloth to cuisine – it is a symbol of strength, simplicity, and prosperity. This bamboo bangle is the largest and heaviest example I have ever seen – online or in real life. I have my own very slim Edwardian bamboo bangle that I have worn almost daily for about 10 years, so I can attest to their wearability and versatility. This extra luxe specimen is in pristine condition and will definitely be noticed! Manufacture Modelled in 9ct yellow gold, I highly suspect it has been gilded in 18ct as it is the butteriest yellow colour. There is a full suite of British hallmarks for Birmingham 1909 on one side. No makers mark that I can find, unfortunately. The bangle is hollow and wax filled, as was the tradition for these bangles. The wax helps to prevent dings from accidental impact, and in this case it has worked well – there’s not a single dent or scratch anywhere to be found. The oval design was to prevent the bangle from slipping around on the wrist, but as the pattern on this bangle goes all the way around it really doesn’t matter which way is up. It opens with a sturdy hinge, closes with a tongue and groove clasp and has a brand new 18ct gold safety chain (it was the only way I could get the colour to match!) The tongue is original and still has the WAX FILLED stamp. The bangle is 12.3mm wide and 12mm deep. The bangle has an internal circumference of 17cm / 6 3/4” Weighs 41.58 grams. Condition Outstanding. Rarely do I see an antique jewel is such exceptional condition. It genuinely looks like it has never been worn, although given that the safety chain was missing I’m sure that was not the case. Clearly it has been a cherished treasure for over 100 years.
